Adverbs: Modifiers of Words

An adverb modifies or changes the meaning of a verb, an adjective, a clause, another adverb, or any clause and phrase. It is different from an adjective and a determiner which directly modifies a noun.
Most of the time, an adverb is formed by adding –ly to an adjective such as beautiful and beautifully.

Take a look at these examples:

     The doctor arrived.

     The doctor arrived early.

The first sentence suggests that the doctor has just arrived. It does not state the time of the doctor’s arrival.
The second sentence suggests that the doctor has just arrived and he arrived early. The adverb early states that time when the doctor arrived.
In other words, an adverb gives additional meaning to an adjective, a verb, another adverb, a clause or a phrase. You can say that adverbs express time, manner, location, and degree.

     More examples:

     The kid plays his toy

You can picture a scene of a kid playing his toy in this sentence.

The kid plays his toy happily.

You can picture a scene of a kid playing his toy while smiling because of the adverb happily.

     The winner received his trophy.

The sentence above suggests that there was a winner and he received his trophy.

The winner received his trophy excitedly.

The sentence above suggests that there was a winner and it expresses what the winner felt while receiving his trophy.

     Note:

Do not confuse an adjective with an adverb. Though both of them modify words and change its meaning, an adjective modifies nouns while an adverb modifies some words except nouns.

The happy princess wandered around the palace.

The word happy in the sentence above is an adjective because it tells that the noun princess is feeling happy.

The princess wandered around the palace happily

The word happily in the sentence above tells that the princess roams around the palace in a happy manner. Hence, the adverb happily modifies the verb wandered.
